George Hamilton
Over the past four decades, the distinctive voice of George Hamilton has provided the soundtrack to many iconic moments in Irish sport. “The nation holds its breath” – his comment when David O’Leary stepped up to take the penalty that put the Republic of Ireland into the last eight at World Cup in 1990 – became the title of his first memoir. Rugby, track and field athletics, not to mention hockey and rowing, have also featured prominently in a career that has taken in fourteen of football’s World Cups – twelve men’s, two women’s – eleven Olympic Games, and a host of international championships. In a parallel universe, he recently celebrated twenty- years as host of his classical music show, The Hamilton Scores, a staple of weekend mornings on Irish radio’s music and arts channel, RTÉ Lyric FM.
